Take Five: Exploring Your Senses in Italy
Dates: May 19 - 25, 2013
Instructor/Leader: Mary Beth Shaw
Cost - $2995
Trip Description
Experience Italy with all your senses. Join Mary Beth Shaw for a painting journey in mixed media - a multi-sensory feast where each and every aspect of this beautiful country is savored and reflected back in sumptuous paintings.
Suitable for all levels, each student will develop paintings that encompass techniques such as:
~ Working on foil
~ Making 3 dimensional parts with tissue, clay and plexiglass
~ Creating texture with Wood Icing
~ Making uniquely 'Italian' paint colors by working with pure pigments.
You will work gently layer on layer and learn to symbolically translate the fabulous sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches of our daily experience into ornate yet personal artworks that reveal the heart and soul of Orvieto.
All work will be done with modern day materials, while emulating ancient techniques. You will work across multiple wood panels using raw pigment and soft pastel. Illuminated materials will add depth and Wood Icing will create amazing texture and distressed effects. Our modern day frescoes will glow with memories.
As life slows down Italian style, you will take the time to savor each moment with your full consciousness. The senses heighten allowing you to transcend any perceived limitations and our art will move to a new level.
Itinerary
May 19: Arrive Orvieto, welcome dinner
May 20: Orvieto from the Inside Out
Tour the convent, walk into town, have coffee at a sweet street cafe, tour the Cathedral with a local guide, see the best of shopping and main streets, lunch made for us specially by the nuns back at the convent. Enjoy an olive oil and wine tasting and historical look at Orvieto from her Etruscan beginnings.
Studio - Start by using Wood Icing to make a Collagraph Plate that is loosely based on impressions of the town. The Collagraph Plate will involve stencils and some loose drawing.
May 21: Studio
Begin playing with pigments and color and pull prints off of the Collagraph Plates from the previous day. Create other painted pages (without the plate) using this as an opportunity to loosen up and play with a limited palette to see how many colors we can create. Prepare backgrounds on substrates, working with gold and silver foil. Use texture with stencils and learn how to 'write' into textured areas, adding your own symbolic language.
Afternoon exploration - Cooking class and dinner
May 22: Studio
Using the prepared substrates, begin layout with collage of previously painted pages layered up with transparent painted effects; build 3 dimensional parts with clay and Plexi. Painting layer after layer, develop color gradually with pure pigment, pastel, heavy body acrylic and fluid acrylic. Develop 'drips' with airush paint and ink, using sensory memory as a guide.
Afternoon exploration - Visit ancient Etruscan caves
May 23: Market Day!!!
Off to the market right after breakfast. Shop for picnic lunch...
Studio - Continued layers to build our paintings.
Afternoon exploration - See wine making process and enjoy an exquisite wine tasting off “the rock”
May 24: Studio
Each person will learn to assess their own work in order to determine the next move. Additional techniques include distressing of certain areas, increasing lights and darks, 'popping' up an area of interest, focusing on the Golden Ratio of art. Finish up paintings with fine tuning. Students may consult individually for evaluation (if desired).
Early Evening - Student show and share reception.
Final dinner together.
May 25: Depart Orvieto for further adventures!

Meet Mary Beth
Mary Beth Shaw worked in the insurance industry for 18 years before one day she went crazy and quit her job. While exploring her creativity, she re-ignited a childhood love of art. She is now ecstatic to support herself as a full time painter, teaching workshops and participating in fine art fairs nationwide. Her mixed media process utilizes pastel, ink, marker and acrylics layered with loads of texture and various collage materials; she welcomes so-called “mistakes” because they lead to wonderful opportunities and discoveries. She works in series and has several bodies of work which employ her own symbolism of embedded meaning. She is the author of Flavor for Mixed Media, published in 2011 by North Light. Living in St. Louis with her husband and 2 cats, Mary Beth is passionate about every moment of life.
