Trip Description
One of the best things about the "trip of a lifetime" is that we can bring back a little something that keeps those magical days alive in us. A pretty piece of pottery, a filmy dress, or even a postcard can take you right back to those evening strolls in Paris or lunches in a Greek taverna. And just like magic, we feel that sense of newness, anticipation, and exploration all over again. Sometimes a simple reminder of who we can be is enough to get us there in everyday life.
In this workshop, we'll do lots of exploring, both physically and creatively. We'll walk along centuries-old lanes, breathe in the aromas of Italian fare, sample the essence of grape and olive, and run our eyes along the fabulous light-catching mosaics of Orvieto's cathedral. And then we'll look inside to capture the pivotal moment that brings it all home for us. We'll use these epiphanies to translate our trip into mosaic using techniques practiced during the week.
Our theme will be Postcards Home: Mosaic Talismans. We'll create 1-4 small mosaics that capture the face or feel of Italy, bringing into play abundant light and texture. Subjects will be entirely yours, and the hope is you'll choose images that speak to you deeply. Then you'll select techniques and materials to make that voice resonate long after you return home.
Each day will be composed of a lesson on technique, a suggested exercise, and time to work on your own, as well as ample time to explore Orvieto for inspiration. We'll cover:
Converting your photographs to mosaic designs through
computer software (no drawing necessary!),
Bringing light and energy to your work,
Choosing materials to bring an image to life, and
Working in miniature.
Mosaics will be postcard-sized, allowing everyone to finish at least one piece in the workshop. Extra portability will allow us to work in pleine air if we choose, maximizing our ability to soak up the sights, sounds, and feel of Umbria.
Because this workshop will be tailored to each individual student, all levels of mosaic experience (or inexperience!) are welcome. Materials will be provided, but we'll also do a bit of Italian scavenging for authentic bits to include in our art. Our goal in Postcards Home will be to combine a little bit of Italy with a little bit of our true selves, our inner home, to create mosaic touchstones that will ring true long after we're back on our own turf. Pam is looking forward to exploring with you.

Meet Pam Goode
Pam is a nationally recognized mosaic artist based in Charlotte, NC. Known for her sense of whimsy and color, Pam's mosaics transcend the subject at hand and go straight for the heart. "My goal is to bring a sense of joy, wonder, or peace to viewers. It isn't enough for me to create a mosaic; I need to create a mosaic that sings, that resonates."
An avid traveler, Pam is most inspired by being in unfamiliar surrounds where every sight, every thought, is new. "I see everything differently -- feel everything differently -- and the ability to communicate my own transformation though art thrills me."

Immersed in mosaics since 1999, Pam founded Ciel Gallery in 2008 in an effort to provide exhibition opportunities for mosaic artists, which were sadly lacking at the time. The first gallery of its type in the US, Ciel has exhibited works from across the country, as well as Italy, Ireland, Australia, England, Wales, Canada, and Ecuador. After introducing much of Charlotte to the intricacies of mosaic art, the demand for classes grew so much that Pam now teaches weekly, in addition to hosting visiting artists from across the US and Canada.
Pam works with a variety of materials, including glass, porcelain, stone, and found objects. "I'm drawn to create with mixed materials because I want, above all, to create as large and as full an image as I can manage. I pull from the miscellanea of life -- sometimes messy, sometimes arbitrary, always fascinating, always more cluttered than we had hoped. The pruning and fitting together of disparate materials becomes an ordering of my own thoughts, emotions, and priorities, and allows the finished piece to serve as a kind of talisman along the path."
Pam's mosaics have been selected for the prestigious Mosaic Arts International three times, with exhibitions in Phoenix, San Diego, and Chicago, and have been featured twice in the highly competitive Mosaic Art Now. She has also appeared in numerous publications.
