"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes."
Carl Jung

Trip Description
Spend an amazing week under the tutelage of Heidi Darr-Hope as you discover your own unique visual vocabulary and create your own
personal mandala. A mandala is a work of art composed of a sacred circle within a square or rectangle. Mandalas have been created by many different cultures as a visual means to lead the mind into introspective meditation or prayer.

Heidi says the following about why she is leading this retreat.
“We are living in a time of uncertainty, unsure what our future holds. When our world begins to turn upside down, sometimes it becomes easy to blame the world’s problems on outside structures. In our fast paced lives, our culture leaves us little time for quiet reflection. We need time to stop, to wander, to reflect, to renew and connect with whom we are and what we are doing in our outer world.

“Italy summons feelings of being fully alive, of living life out loud, of sensual delight, of gregarious passionate people, of luscious food and wine, aromatic artisan breads, slow pressed olive oil, the smells of the countryside, the sights of a culture with deep ancient roots and a passion for living unhurriedly…..

“Art is an intuitive expression of inner being - a self portrait, a translation of our world. We are all born with access to this language but somewhere along the way it gets buried deep within. By engaging our hands and our mind through "object-making" creativity blossoms and unfolds into a powerful experience, an enriching experience.

“These mandalas will paint a picture of your life, where you are now and where your growing edge is leading you. By slowing down and truly paying attention to what is before us, the physical world is a tremendous teacher.  Artists respond to the visual world, noticing what others might not. We speak using a visual language. In Orvieto, you will begin to learn this silent powerful language of symbol which inevitably leads us onto the path of grace.”

You do not need to possess any particular talent to experience the gifts of creativity, just an open mind and a willingness to discover and trust your intuition. Absolutely NO experience is needed.

her home, her husband and two grown children, her garden, her stacks of books to read, her drawers of found objects and photographs, her Movie Group, her dog Ziggy, her yoga, her grocery list, her BodyFit classes, her art and healing students, her love for scrumptious food and delectable fine wine, her Circle of Dreams, her long list of places to travel…her desire to find the quiet within the roar…
Her life and her art follow an intuitive path influenced by it all. Having worked as a professional artist and teacher for over thirty years, her hands and eyes and soul are trying their best to absorb it all, striving to live within the magical realm where the outer world melds with the inner.

Being particularly drawn to non-western cultures, her interests have taken her to the far off lands of Peru and India and of late she is drawn to our southern neighbor, Mexico. But not the Mexico of Spring breakers and cruise ships, rather the Mexico of the indigenous people found in remote villages in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas. Her experiences there have informed this current series of work.

In 2001, South Carolina Midlands Magazine named Heidi as one of the top ten Woman Making a Difference, honoring the work she has done in the art and healing field. She has recently established a non-profit, Healing Icons® – sometimes words are not enough, whose mission is to introduce the creative process as a means of understanding the emotional turmoil of life-disrupting events through self-expression. Her workshops are offered in her Columbia studio at 80808 Vista Studios and Gallery.
