Meet LK
LK Ludwig
creates art and
chases her
three small
children around
in a Victorian four-square in a very small town in Pennsylvania. Many weekends are spent in the woods and at the river, where family memories and art are made as the Allegheny River flows by.

Because of her strong belief in creating around life’s experiences, nature, love and life seep deeply into LK's artwork, making it content-rich and personally meaningful. LK's books Mixed Media Nature Journals  and True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling came out in 2008. LK’s third book, Collaborative Art Journals and Shared Vision in Mixed Media is due out June 2009. And she is working on a fourth book! Her work has been in a number of books, magazines and shown in
various galleries.

Illuminated Moments

Dates: May 16 - 22, 2010
Instructor/Leader:
LK Ludwig

Trip Description
“I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” M. Hershey

Come with LK on an adventure. Each day you’ll see things new, both in the richness of Orvieto’s streets and inside yourselves in the studio. You’ll fill pages with color and light, with memories and sights, creating a reliquary of your own to hold illuminated moments. You’ll gather inspiration from the natural surroundings in the lush Italian countryside, and draw upon a depth of history that dates to the sixth century B.C. to fill journal pages with content and your heart with memories. Using both mixed media art journaling and nature journaling techniques you will create a gorgeous, unique journal that will include a record of your magical time in Orvieto and make room for any adventures you may have to come. Think of the techniques you will cover in class as the Italian flair in your visual vocabulary. Activities have been specially selected to enhance your in-class experience and include a visit to Etruscan tombs as well as a bit of “treasure” collecting at an Orvieto warehouse.

A private class blog has been set up to enhance your experience and help you prepare for your trip as a place to ask questions, get inspiration, or just chat:

Techniques that will be covered during our time together in Italy include nature printing on wire mesh, dye and salt printing, gelatin monoprints, bleach printing, applying image and text to wire mesh with patina, working with photographs, rubbings, found poetry, creating backgrounds with texture and color, integrating ephemera, and easy ways to include the figure in
your work without drawing. Guided exercises will assist in creating rich personal content. You’ll finish your week and your journal by creating layered, rich pages housed in a simple binding to create a rich meaningful journal that illuminates your moments in Orvieto. Each day will offer a new adventure in the studio and in Orvieto!
