Painting the Landscape

Dates: May 24 - 30, 2009
Instructor/Leader:
Dan L. Carrel

Trip Description

Be inspired by the beauty of Italy and leave with beautiful paintings capturing your week. Dan believes anyone and everyone can paint. He is motivated by the conviction that artistic expression is a birthright and is committed to helping people develop it. During the week Dan will introduce participants to what has been a life long quest for creating teaching models that decode the mystery of creative visual thinking. Thirty years ago he discovered an ancient visual alphabet called “Chaos” that unlocks the mind’s creative visual doors. As you learn the alphabet you develop the ability to paint a very complex, realistic painting in a way that is extremely easy.  Dan will show how to create a strong visual framework for your painting’s composition. You will create
realism through 5 question games resulting in finished and powerful paintings. Dan uses acrylic paints.

Orvieto and its landscapes will serve as the inspiration and basis for your work. After using your camera to record the glorious scenery, you will use your photo images to paint. During the week you will:

• Learn what makes up the visual alphabet
   • Create a visual alphabet through painting
   • Use photography as a painting tool
   • Take a photographic tour of beautiful Orvieto
   • Be guided in hands on painting techniques
   • Learn how to compose your pictures
   • Be shown how to create realism in your painting
   • Learn how to solve painting problems yourself

For the last 33 years Dan has been an art teacher and professional artist. He has served as art department chair at Benedictine college in Atchison, Kansas since 1993. Although he has taught at 5 universities and colleges, much of his experience and passion is in helping the non-traditional student learn or relearn accessing the mental functions associated with art.

After personally working with approximately 5,000 people over the years Dan has come to the conclusion that almost everyone has the capability to personally experience the essence of art in their lives.

Dan earned his M.F.A. in 1976 from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and his B.F.A. in 1973 from Kansas State University in Manhattan.
