One of the most important Renaissance painters, a bit overlooked, was Luca Signorelli from Cortona. At the height of his career, he painted a small chapel in the Cathedral of Orvieto . . . a chapel that was a critical influence to Michelangelo as he was on his way to paint the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It is filled with the most beautiful, lyrical, golden figures ascending into Heaven . . . along with some gruesome depictions of those cast into Hell. The chapel is a riot of form, figure, color, and masterful perspective. This incredible treasure will serve as a pivotal source of inspiration as Orvieto embraces you.
