Inner and Outer Light - luminous watercolor in orvieto
Enjoy a fun week of non-intimidating watercolor visual storytelling.
Dates: September 27 - October 3, 2015
Instructor/Leader: Melissa Harris
Cost - $2995
Follow (lightly) in the footsteps of Caravaggio, the Italian painter of light and celebrate the beauty of this ancient town in watercolor. Artists throughout history have followed the call to Italy to paint. Watercolor is the perfect portable medium to create paintings that will serve as your own personal watercolor "diary. Sessions will be split between studio time with some basic watercolor technique – color mixing, washes, composition, ways of creating texture, and forays to visually stimulating locations in town as well as markets, orchards or vineyards. Out of the studio we will either paint plein air (on the spot) or take photos to paint from in the studio. We will become attuned to how light falls on any given subject giving it depth and character. We will call upon the magic of the area, including the Etruscan caves to summon inspiration for both the inner, (out of our head) and outer plein air work.
When you depart you will see the world around you with fresh eyes - more adept at viewing the world through light and shadow.
Outside of the classroom you will:
Single occupancy available for an additional cost. Because Italian cuisine is such fun, some meals are not prearranged allowing you the freedom to choose where and what to eat. We do give lots of advice and no one eats alone! Travel costs are not included.

She received a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to study Painting in Paris which whet her appetite for documenting her travels in paint. She has painted the arches of Morocco, the temples of Bali, the Goddess temples in Malta, sacred sites throughout the UK, pyramids in Mexico, coastlines of Costa Rica and Hawaii and numerous locations throughout the US.
Melissa has been teaching art classes since 1991 when she was invited to teach at the New York Open Center in New York City. She has also taught at the Omega Institute, the Barrett Art Center and various other retreat centers. She maintains a loyal following of private students, some since 1990. She offers a unique combination of technique with an ability to tune into what each student needs in order to help them find their own individual expressive style.
Her favorite way to spend any vacation is by painting wherever she goes. She works in both oil and watercolor in her studio but in watercolor only when she is on the road. In her book Painting Outside the Lines Melissa answers questions about style, technique, inspiration and more. Melissaharris.com
