Pathways to Discovery - Creative Writing in Orvieto
Dates: September 18 - 24, 2011
Instructor/Leader: Kathy Dunn
Cost: $2875
Trip Description
”People write for all kinds of reasons.
Whether you want to tell a story, discover
new possibilities, thank a friend, find new
ways to look at a problem, capture a
moment, or even make a shopping list:
writing offers pathways to discovery and
connection.” Kathy Dunn
Join Kathy Dunn and fellow travelers on a meander down the cobblestone streets of Orvieto. Discover layers of history through
ancient architecture, and pass through the narrow doorways of local shopkeepers. Experience the quiet solitude of an olive grove, and the exuberant clamor of the marketplace. Tour Giovanni Dubini's vineyard as he shares his passion for creating a wine that reflects the land, the legacy, and the soul of Orvieto.
In between adventures, Kathy will help you find ways to
capture and reflect on your discoveries using tools and
techniques from the world of creative writing. Kathy’s
approach centers on the conviction that everyone is
creative, everyone is a gifted storyteller – and everyone
can write. In the workshop sessions, you will discover
strengths you already bring to the writing process, and
build on these throughout the week as you explore the
captivating world of Orvieto.
In the afternoons, you can schedule an individual
consultation with Kathy to talk about specific questions, concerns or discoveries - or about the writing life in general.
A rich variety of experiences will fuel your writing throughout the week. Enjoy a tasting of olive oil from theregion. Join a James Beard chef in
his kitchen as he explains the art of
Italian cuisine; then jump into the fun
as you roll out pasta, and dine on the
many dishes you've created. Explore
ancient caves where Etruscans made
and stored their version of Orvieto
wine, as far backas 800 B.C.
Tell a story, explore new worlds, and
discover your strengths – on the
streets of Orvieto and in the silence
of your notebook. Enjoy the solitude
of writing and the out-loud joy of
connecting with fellow writers, traveling companions, and the people and world of Orvieto.
And return home with:
Greater confidence in your ability to communicate through writing
A deeper understanding of your skills as a writer
A clearer sense of your writing "Voice"
A variety of approaches to getting started & keeping the flow going
Strategies to support your writing practice back home

Meet Kathy
Kathy Dunn lives
and thrives in
New England,
where she runs
creative writing
workshops for
people from all walks of life. A self-described late starter, she began writing in her mid-30’s with the help of
a gifted mentor and the protected space of a writing workshop. She has been writing and helping others to
write ever since.
“Helping people write involves knowing that whenever a person puts pen to paper, they are saying something important. Whether it is fiction or fact, a dream or a question: if it’s worth the effort it takes to write down, it’s important.
"What I love about my work is the courage people bring to their writing; I love what I see when a person first looks up after reading something they have just written – when they have discovered, through their writing, something they hadn't fully understood. Whether the participant is a confident writer or an uncertain beginner, writing brings new images, new stories, and new understandings to the world.”
An Affiliate of Amherst Writers &
Artists, Kathy studied and trained
with Pat Schneider, founder of the AWA method. She has led creative writing workshops through Main Street Writers for 18 years, and has conducted writing labs and workshops in elementary, high school and college settings. She also consults to educational, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations on ways to use story for personal, organizational, and social change.
Kathy’s poetry, profiles and articles have appeared in anthologies (Boomer Girls: Coming of Age in the 1960's, and Line Drives: 100 Contemporary Baseball Poems); literary journals (Peregrine, Exquisite Corpse, the minnesota review, Equinox); magazines Yankee Magazine, and Elms College Magazine); and books (The Writer as an Artist, and Writing Alone and with Others).
Kathy has a Bachelor’s degree in Education, and Master’s degrees in Counseling and Organizational Management.
Kathy has begun a blog of her own about this trip. Follow her as she pens her thoughts!
