All Hands on Deck
Exploring Metal, Cloth and Paper
Dates: September 12 - 18, 2010
Instructor/Leader: Leighanna Light
Cost - $2775
Trip Description
Immerse yourself in the glory of art making (including serious junking and photography!) in this amazing medieval ancient city.
For as long as Leighanna can remember, she has been collecting decks. Decks of cards, art decks, self help, tarot...you name it! She loves the feel of an unbound group of pages & the freedom to rearrange and rework these pieces.
After developing a workshop called the Vintage Metal Deck she learned she was not alone in her fascination with decks. In this workshop you will have time to explore new techniques creating 3 different decks. The first will use metal as a substrate, the second cloth and the last working with a heavy, rich paper. Each deck will contain 10 cards & you will learn to incorporate your finds and photos from your Orvieto adventure.
You will explore many different ways to use and distress metal, cloth, paper, and found objects, using many new ideas & techniques! The first three days will be devoted to metal. You will receive in depth instruction on how to work w/ metal including:
applying texture to metal
metal transfers
a variety of ways to forge, distress & mark metal
how to add ink & paint as a design element
using patinas to change the look of the metal
cold connections, alternative ways to attach objects and paper to
your work without using glue
new metal altering techniques
wireworking
correct use of tools & products, including the dapping block
working with object placement, composition & problem solving
During the remaining two days, you will work with a combination of cloth and paper. You will learn:
a variety of new surface design techniques
even more cold connection ideas to use with cloth & paper
how to add texture & depth to your work
composition & design concepts
creating a cohesive, themed project
You will leave with 3 unique beautiful art decks bound by decorative wire. These can easily be transformed into a book or sculpture as a shrine to remind you of your wonderful time in Italy.
