The Gatherings
A Study in Ancient Shadows and Light
Dates: September 19 - 25, 2010
Instructor/Leader: Nina Bagley
Cost - $2790
Trip Description
Dream, if you will, of a hilltop town in the rustic countryside of Italy: ancient earth-toned buildings hugging cliffs weathered and sculptured by wind and by time. Tall, sky-reaching Lombardy poplar trees dotting the surrounding vistas, pale, fading green and gold with the light of early Autumn. Winding paths that lead from stuccoed houses to alleys that beckon with their hint of shadows, of echoes and mystery. Soft colors of faded jewels in terra cotta, ochre, sienna brown, moss green. Gates that open or close at will, often covered in vine tendrils turning golden with the coming of fall. Imagine spending a week in the middle of this dream – of walking the storied cobblestone streets to the black and white chapel in the center of town, of standing at bluff’s edge and seeing groups of houses and buildings that seem like a faraway story, like a game of monopoly on an old, worn board. Imagine yourself rising every morning to the sounds of bells, to sunshine streaming in your bedroom window; imagine walking leisurely into a studio every morning after breakfast and constructing artwork that you’ll carry home with you across the wide, wide waters as a tender and evocative souvenir of a time you walked through the dreams, the streets of a place called Orvieto.
This original, never before taught workshop with Nina Bagley will focus on two objectives: construction of a shadowbox that celebrates the faded colors and play of shadow and light as experienced in Umbrian Italy, and the creation of a rosary style necklace that reminds you of everything you’ve ever dreamed about when imagining yourself walking the streets of a quiet, hilltop Italian town. Because of the dreamy, relaxed atmosphere, we’ll be limiting our tools to those that do not make much commotion, with the exception of a few light taps of a small hammer to attach mica to our shadowbox fronts. Think quiet work here – glue, brush, paint, twisting of wire, fabric, paper – however you wish to embellish your box with items you’ve brought from home. Interspersed with the days’ work on the box will be side trips to the surrounding countryside and shops, to the streets of Orvieto where you may find a special twig, nut, candy wrapper, or cork from a favorite bottle of wine. Anything goes, as long as it is small and flat enough to hold within the shallow box you bring from home.
After we’ve completed our shadowboxes, we’ll move on to the next project: a rosary style necklace with a bronze gate from Nina’s own private custom charm collection. Again, think calming, meditative work here – the repetitive twisting of petite “Nina knots”, the arrangement of pearls, of beads, of colors that reflect your time spent in Italy. The necklace will be constructed with a double set of handmade hook clasps, so that it can be worn a very long, elegant opera length (about 38-40”) or doubled as a loose choker. When the necklace is completed by the next to last day, we’ll review techniques used to attach it to the shadowbox, so that the two can be displayed as a single work of art–of your tender Italian dreams. I do hope you will be able to join us for what will be an achingly beautiful and memorable trip of a lifetime.

Meet Nina
Nina is a full time
jewelry designer
and mixed media
artist workshop
instructor (odd
combo, she says, but that's where the dice fell and that's where the dice have stayed) who is lucky enough to be able to work out of her home and earn an actual living doing this....Her sons are just about grown. Robin has just graduated college, and the Roy is a senior. This makes her proud but sad; she has cherished every moment of life with them and watching them leaving home is bittersweet indeed.

Shadowbox and necklace
Nina loves her art, her books, her surrounding mountains and nature, her life. She has a really great new puppy, Walter, a springer spaniel.
She says, "The stack beside my bed never shortens, but grows. I'm a voracious reader and nature lover - and appreciate a good movie when I can
pay enough attention to do it justice. Favorite book of all time: To Kill a Mockingbird... I love to be out in the woods, next to a stream. I love my boys, without condition. I love my dog, without condition. I'm trying to love myself, without condition. For more go to ornamental.typepad.com
