Sketches of Italy: Dreaming in Paint

Dates: September 20 - 26, 2009
Instructor/Leader:
Judy Wise

Trip Description
In this workshop we will get out into the plein air of Orvieto each day and draw and paint the landscape, food, architecture and the dreams that have brought us to this magical country. First and foremost we are here to have fun. This is a process oriented class but one in which each student will be given the guidance to bring out the best aspects of their own painting style. We will begin each day with a classroom orientation and then stroll outside with our rolling supplies to sketch and paint for a period of time. Each class will conclude with a discussion of what we have created and how we can proceed. On the last day we will create a very special folio to hold our painted memories.

This workshop is for any skill level. Judy believes everyone can draw and paint. Everyone! Students will be comfortable capturing what we see with color and shape, and will have a good time! During the week we will:

  • Learn about mass and value in the landscape
  • Mix colors to capture color values
  • Use soft pencil to scribble and refine values
  • Understand how the mind captures images through sketching
  • Learn how seeing deeply enables us to design from memory
  • Record the general outlines and gestures of the human figure
    and face
  • Learn to tell our story not paint like the masters
  • Tell a beautiful story based on the flavors of Italy
  • Create “frescos secco”
  • Make a portfolio to take home the treasures of the trip

This is an experience of a lifetime. No experience needed - just a sense of adventure!
