Italy: Colors of the Heart, Textures of the Soul
Dates: September 20 - 26, 2009
Instructor/Leader: Katie Kendrick
Trip Description
Traveling to another land opens you up. You are alert, receptive, inquisitive. Katie Kendrick’s visual journal workshop cultivates and builds on this natural openness. As a participant you will have the freedom to explore yourself through the creative process, creating without judgment - letting intuition be your guide. You will focus on maintaining openness and curiosity towards yourself through daily experiences in the beautiful, seductive, nurturing environment of Orvieto and Italy. Your imagination will be given free reign and you will explore landscapes of heart and soul in tandem with the new physical environments in which you find yourself. The process will open you to discovering secrets about yourself through your art play, what emerges when you create. Listen to the forms that attract you - rocks, trees, sky, colors, textures, buildings, cobblestone streets - and translate them onto your visual journal pages or free standing “daily chronicle”.
During the week, designed so that absolutely no art experience is
required, you will:
• Discover ways to integrate collage elements with paint & original
artwork.
• Learn techniques to achieve depth and dimension in your work
through the use of texture.
• Draw and paint simple forms and figures inspired by the rich beauty of
Orvieto (no drawing or painting skills necessary).
• Become more mindful of what delights and attracts you in your
environment and learn ways to translate those feelings of heart into
your artwork.
• Use photos, transfers, paint to convey a story or impression.
• Create “secret” places in your journal by embedding and layering
words, photos, and collage remnants.
• Construct a beautiful and simple textured journal cover complete with
mica window to display a found object treasure.
No experience needed - just a sense of adventure!

Meet Katie
Katie finds the
process of art
making to be a
powerful vehicle for connecting her to deeper aspects of her own nature, as well as to the natural world around her. Her focus is on the process of creativity, and its inherent capacity to heal, enrich, & transform our lives. With intuition and mindfulness as guides, she delights in the unexpected outcomes and divine imperfections inherent in the spontaneous creative process.
Her work has been published in Cloth Paper Scissors magazine (issues 9 and 15), issues of Somerset Studio magazine, ARTitude zine, the cover (back) of Teesha Moore’s Art and Life zine (volume 9), and Artist Trading Card Workshop and Artist Trading Cards; An Anthology of ATC’s, two books by Bernie Berlin. In addition, her art is featured in several books released in 2008 including Mixed Media Self Portraits by Cate Coulacos Prato, True Vision; Authentic Art Journaling by L.K. Ludwig, and 1000 Artist Journal Pages by Dawn DeVries Sokol.
Katie delights in teaching classes in mixed media, collage, and cloth in workshops across the country. To see more of her work you can visit her web-site: www.katiekendrick.com and blog:
